Red Currant Wine

Not sure if I have mentioned this before, but I have 2 1/2 gallons of currant wine brewing in a giant jar in our great room.
I pressed and strained the currents a day or so after we picked them back around the end of July and "assembled" the recipe.
A couple of weeks ago, I moved the jar over to a table that I brew my Kombucha on, so it would be nearer the woodstove, as it was not turning as fast as the recipe had said it would.

I little bit ago, I was hanging a picture over said table, and I could hear lots of bubbling in the jar, so I gave it a sniff, and could tell that it was starting to get an edge to it finally.
I tasted a tiny bit, and, even though it still has a ways to go, I can tell that its going to be quite amazing!!

We are hoping to be able to sample it at Christmas time, but it remains to be seen, if that will happen.
The rate its been brewing at, it may well be Valentines Day when its finally ready.

And no, I will not be drinking it "three tumbler fulls at a time", LOL!, to quote Marilla ;o)

We need to be scared- very scared!

CDC: At Least 4,000 Americans Dead From H1N1  -AP

"The new, higher figure was first reported by The New York Times. It includes deaths caused by complications related to swine flu, including pneumonia and bacterial infections. Until now, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had conservatively put the U.S. swine flu death count at more than 1,000. Officials said this week they're working on an even more accurate calculation.

The CDC says "many millions" of Americans have caught the pandemic flu virus since it first appeared in April."

Let me get this straight.  Many millions of people have caught the swine flu since April.  So far, only 1000 people have died from swine flu.  So now to make the number scarier, they are reporting deaths from other illnesses in people who had swine flu.  That brings the number to 4000 people.  But is that scary yet?  How bout this number- 30,000 people annually.

30,000.  This is the number of people, according to CDC, who die every year from the common flu virus.  We're already 7 months into this "pandemic", and the numbers are either 1,000 or 4,000.  143 or 571, whichever number you go by.  With 5 months to go, that means that at most, another 2855 people will die from swine flu in a year.  Less than 8,000 people.  And that's using the highest number CDC has reported- the number that includes all the deaths from other causes post swine flu.  So... after a little numbers crunching, I find that even using the highest, scariest numbers presented by our CDC, swine flu is only 26% as deadly as the common flu.   If you use the lower number of deaths, roughly 1,000, then swine flu is less than 7% as deadly as common flu.

Our government and media want us to be very scared of swine flu.  Why?  Perhaps the answer is in the following article:  http://abcnews.go.com/Business/big-business-swine-flu/Story?id=8820642&page=1

$1.5 billion made from H1N1 vaccine sales, on top of  $1 billion from seasonal flu shots.

Winter arrived!!!

The snow is piling up fast. We are to expect as much as 20 inches with this snowstorm.
Chickens have decided they will no longer be leaving their coop, LOL!
We are going to rig an extra roof, so that they can get out and move around a bit more.
We will do this by adding a tarp to the roof edge, angling it down to meet the top of the fence.
The angle is quite steep, and will keep the snow from building up very much on it.

Recommended Daily Foods, please comment

Above, is the Food Pyramid. This is the old guide. I will also do a review of the new one, which does ask for smaller servings, but that is all that changed on it.
Most of us a familiar with it, and some may even strive to eat everything recommended.
As you can see, they give a range of recommended amounts to be eaten per day. This covers various metabolisms and body types.
I am going to focus on the middle ground, so where it may say, 6-11 servings, I will go with 8 servings.
Also, in trying to keep this post under control, I am just going to post amounts, and not pictures, as I think most of us can visualize fairly well, what this would look like in real life.
I am also going to be generous when inputing the foods into fitday, and make the best choices possible. Unprocessed and homemade if possible.
Grains, 8 servings.
2 cups of dry cereal
3 slices of bread
1 cup of rice
2 cups of pasta
Vegatables, 4 servings
4 cups of various veges

Interesting Project upcoming

I am going to compile a set of pictures to show exactly how much food the average person would eat per day, if they followed the FDA's food pyramid.
It will be a few days before I have it all ready to post though.

I plan to input all of it into Fitday, to get a clear picture of actual calories, fat, carbs and protein it actually is.
I think we will all be a bit shocked in the end.
